Depuis la Renaissance, l’estampe a constitué une révolution capitale dans l’histoire de la culture visuelle et de la perception de l’œuvre d’art : l’idée de graver un sujet sur une matrice, puis de l’imprimer en de multiples exemplaires, a totalement bouleversé les notions d’originalité et d’unicité traditionnellement attachées à l’œuvre d’art. Bien moins coûteuse et moins fragile que le dessin ou la peinture, l’estampe a trouvé des applications extrêmement variées – des plus nobles aux plus humbles – destinées à des publics élargis, mettant quasiment l’image à la portée de tous. Mais paradoxalement, le caractère multiple des estampes originales, la soumission au modèle inhérente à l’estampe dite de « reproduction », la complexité de certains procédés techniques, la question des retirages posthumes de planches, ont pu entraîner, incompréhension, méfiance et préjugés. L’évolution des statuts de l’image imprimée est une question des plus actuelles et des plus transversales à travers les siècles. Elle se rattache pleinement à l’histoire de la culture visuelle et appelle de stimulantes approches interdisciplinaires. Elle est au cœur de ce recueil auquel ont contribué de nombreux spécialistes, chercheurs en histoire de l’art, en économie de l’art, conservateurs de musées, conservateurs de bibliothèques, experts…
